What to Consider When Selecting Window Treatment and Upholstery Fabric
For some reason people think you can make a window treatment out of just about any fabric you can find. You absolutely can, but should you?. Just like you COULD make a construction worker's pants out of silk, would you really want to do that. The same holds true for fabric choices in your home. There are definitely fabrics you don't want to use for drapery, and some you don't want to use for seating. There is a lot that goes into making a good looking end product that will last, and the fabric choice has a lot to do with it. So, sometimes even though you find the perfect color or pattern, the way you want to incorporate it into the design may need to be rethought.
Step #1: First & Foremost, Determine the Function
Knowing how the fabric is going to get used is an important first step. Is it going to be put on a bench cushion where toddlers eat? Performance fabric or washable fabric is the best choice. Is it going to be on outdoor furniture? A 100% solution dyed acrylic will last the longest. Is it going to be in a drapery? 100% cotton is the best choice. For the love of God please avoid linen if you at all can! Is it going to be for a roman shade? A fabric that is printed on grain is key to it's function in the long term. Is it going to be for seating? You'll want a durable upholstery fabric for sure.
Step #2: Next, Plan for Durability & Performance
When thinking about durability and performance, Revolution Fabric is my go-to brand, especially in kitchens. Their fabrics are stain resistant in the fiber, not with a chemical layer sprayed on. They are easy to clean using just diluted bleach (even the dark ones). Sunbrella and Outdura are my go-to brands for 100% dyed acrylics. I don't have a particular brand favorite for window treatments. Like I said above, it's more about fiber content and the quality of the printing to be on grain that ensures a shade will function well or that drapery will not flare.
Step #3: Finally, Pick the Fabric Color & Pattern
Of course we all pick fabric based on the look first, but please consider it's fiber content. It is such an important factor in the look of the final product. If you absolutely fall in love with a fabric, it can ALWAYS be made into a throw pillow. Be more picky about the fabrics for functional pieces like seating and window treatments where fiber content is so important.
I am happy to help early in the process. If you are choosing fabric and want the best possible result, let’s have a consultation with your selections. If you have a few to choose from, I can easily tell you which would be the best for the application you have in mind.
